Gravity Gems

These illustrations were among my firsthand practice of using the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. At the time I was pretty into both Gravity Falls and Steven Universe so I decided to make gem versions of five of the main characters. The gems I used were (at the time) not gems used in the series, so they were my own interpretations of what they’d be like. They’re obviously not the greatest, but I believe showing illustrative progress is a good thing and hey, maybe someone will get a kick out of these. They were all made around late 2016/early 2017.

Emerald Wendy

The entire idea from these stemmed from a conversation with a friend about Wendy’s mom. I half joking said that maybe her mom is a gem from Steven Universe, and it just sorta stuck. To me it sorta fit with how absurd GF lore was at times.

Now for my version of Emeralds. Emeralds were created to be direct servants and protectors of the diamonds. They’re programmed from the beginning without free will, and can only be freed from their control by having their gems damaged. Their weapon of choice is a large axe like weapon that can be split in half for dual wielding abilities. Truly a force to be reckoned with.

Fluorite Dipper

Like the Emerald, I had this idea for Fluorite prior to the episode that showed them off. My version of the gems was quite different than the fusion depicted in the series.

My version of Fluorites are that they are a rare type of gem that overwhelmingly present as male. Like Peridots, they are very tech savvy and are stunned when it comes to their own powers. This led them to create their own abilities/weapons and store them in their gems such as drills and gem slicing knives. They’re known to be the starts of rebellions, which is why fewer and fewer have been made in recent years.

Zultanite Mabel

This one is probably my favorite gem type I created. Zultanite is a stone that’s known for changing color, so I thought it was a perfect gem for Mabel to be.

Zultanite are the closest things on Homeworld to a human spy, formed to spy on possible detractors to the empire. For this reason, all Zultanite wear a mask to protect their identies and only show themselves to gems they trust. They have numerous spy themed weapons such as grappling hooks and poison darts.

Their most unique ability is their color change ability that allows them to blend into any situation. They also tend to change color based on their current mood.

Apatite Gideon

I always found Gideon to be an underrated character in the Gravity Falls fandom, so I made him a Gemosona as well. The gem Apatite reminded me off his psychic pendant. Interestingly enough, Apatite is believed to be linked to psychic abilities so I thought it was the perfect Gem for him.

Apatite Gems are rather rare, but powerful. Known for their psychic abilities, they’re indispensable assest to the Diamond empire. Issue is that they’re quite independent and arrogant, so it’s difficult to get them to use their powers for anyone but themselves. However, if they meet someone that they truly grow to care about, they are doggedly loyal to this new friend.

Pyrite Bill

The Illustration here is an edited version of my original Bill Cipher Pen Tool drawing, so it’s not my favorite, in fact I outright dislike it in comparison to the others, but I wanted a fifth gem type. Went with Pyrite since Bill is known as a trickster and Pyrite is better known as Fools Gold. Almost a no brainer decision.

The backstory is a bit weak as well. Pyrite Gems are often seen as a menace. They’re tricksters and their shapeshifting abilities are unmatched making them a force to be reckoned with. They’re often times sent to be shattered simply for their existence, but their manipulative abilities are also unmatched.

Fusions

I also designed two fusions based on the above gems. The first is Amazonite which is a fusion of Emerald and Fluorite or more specifically Emerald Wendy and Dipper Fluorite. Amazonite combines the Emerald’s dual wielding axe with the defense drill of the Fluorite creating two jagged chainsaw weapons, perfect for the two sets of arms. The fusion is a bit unstable and doesn’t last long before going berserk and falling apart.

The second is Hematite; a fusion of Fluorite and Zultanite. Hematite is a well balanced gem with a relaxed personality. Their weapon is a fusion of the Zultanite’s spy gear with the Fluorite. Not a great design in my opinion. Prefer Amazonite by far.

Finnick the Fluorite

Finally, this here is my first rather rough attempt at a character ref sheet. While creating the headcanon for Wendy’s mom being an Emerald gem, I made her a partner in crime named Finnick.

The idea behind them was that Finnick was a renegade against the empire that was nearly captured by an Emerald soldier. While trying to flee, he ends up in contact with her. He attempted to shatter her gem on the back of her neck but only ended up slicing it, snapping her out of her brainwashed trance.

I wouldn’t mind redoing this since I believe I could do better. This was in reality just a basic ref to show to a friend. I’ve always liked him as a character, and think a better ref sheet could be a fun project.
